|Dead Island Heroes|
Logan Carter is one of four heroes in Dead Island. He is one of the special survivors who is immune to the mysterious zombie virus, Kuru, that has claimed the lives of hundreds of others on the island of Banoi. He is an experienced surfer and was once a first round NFL quarterback star of a Texas football team, though he fractured his knees in a deadly crash that resulted from a street race that killed his passenger. Now living a life of bitterness and despair, he took off to Banoi Island for a vacation, except he found himself stuck on the island as a result to the outbreak, and must fight to stay alive and figure out what happened.
Logan belongs to the "Jack-of-All-Trades" class with skills allowing him bonuses in each of the other characters' specializations (blunt weapons, sharp weapons, firearms) in addition to his own focus on thrown weapons. Logan's Rage ability is Bullseye, which allows him to throw a limitless amount of throwing knives while active.
The night before the island is seemingly taken over by the zombie virus, Logan is partying at the Royal Palms Resort.
After a nightmarish journey on Banoi Island, Logan is able to escape the island and continues the story in Dead Island Riptide.
Logan Carter explained the fatal car accident: "I was protected. I had pretty much whatever I wanted – fame, money, women, fast cars. That last one was my downfall. Well … those last two, I guess. I shoulda looked after myself more, but well … there were a lot of parties back then. A lot of parties. Anyway, this one night, I’d had too much to drink, snorted some coke … you know how it is. And this one guy, he started ragging me about my car, calling it a piece of shit, all that. [It was a] Porsche Spyder. Like James Dean used to drive. Classy car...I challenged him to a race. His fucked-up old Buick against my Spyder. I mean, he had no chance, but the dumb fuck took me on. I wanted to teach him a lesson. Not just beat him, but really beat him, you know. Took a bend too quickly. Lost control. Hit a wall at... I dunno... eighty, ninety miles an hour? Shattered my knee. End of my career. But that wasn’t the worst part. Her name was Drew Peters. She came along for the ride. She took the full impact... I got off. What can I say? I had a good lawyer. The judge called it an accident."
Unfortunately, it seems anything claimed by Dead Island: The Book is questionable at best, as the claim that Logan was not convicted for his crime is directly contradicted by Logan's in-game bio, which is read as follows.
"Oh, man. I used to be on top of the world, brother. All-pro quarterback, four years running. Voted the Sexiest Texan in 2004. Beat out Dennis Quaid and Matthew McConaughey, for Christ’s sake. So I drank a few beers now and then. Popped the occasional pill. That’s nothing compared to what the team quacks would shoot me up with just so I could play. Sometimes I just needed to numb the pain. You know what I’m saying? My biggest vice was speed. Not meth, buddy, adrenaline. I blew every penny I had on the fastest cars I could find. Just so you know... I’m a damn good driver. If that asshole I was street racing hadn’t sideswiped me, I never would have crashed. And that poor girl would still be alive. That’s right. It’s his goddamn fault I shattered my leg in six goddamn places. So I had a few drinks in me. So what the fuck? I drive drunk better than I do sober anyway. Of course, I couldn’t play worth shit after that. After I got outta jail, they canned my ass. Said I violated the morals clause on my goddamn contract. Ended up playing semi-pro in fucking Canada. But I’m still a name. Still a celebrity. That’s why they wanted me to promote their blood drive here. That’s why they fucking flew me first class halfway around the goddamn world. Because my name still means something. Logan Carter is not a goddamn douchebag."
- NOTE: Canonically, the other heroes accompany Logan Carter with his journey on Banoi though they only appear in cutscenes. The follow story below is written to only include hero though the other heroes all go through the same experiences
Logan Carter woke up after partying at the concert located outside the Royal Palms Resort. After making his way through a seemingly-abandoned and ransacked hotel, he found himself being chased by zombies. After being attacked and bitten, he awoke in a bungalow on the beach. The terrified survivors inside informed him that his savior, John Sinamoi the lifeguard, was under attack by the undead outside. Logan Carter is able to save Sinamoi and work with the survivors to secure the Lifeguard Tower. From there, Logan Carter helps Sinamoi with his tasks, as well as the quests belonging to the various survivors throughout the Banoi Holiday Resort. The goal of Sinamoi’s group is to stay put and await rescue. Logan Carter is tasked with getting an amplifier from the Lighthouse so Sinamoi can try and radio the mysterious Voice they spoke with earlier from the beach bungalow. At the lighthouse is another group of survivors who want to get off the island. Logan Carter is then forced to help the lighthouse survivors, including turning on the power generator so the beacon can be activated to get the attention of rescue crews. The amplifier is no good in creating a strong enough strength to contact the Voice. Logan Carter’s next task is to get food supplies for the Lifeguard Tower survivors. Sinamoi finds the food runs out just as fast as they find them and requests Logan Carter to go into the city to find food, medicine, and supplies for his group. In order to get through the vehicle-clogged roadways, Logan Carter must retrieve an armored truck from the hotel parking garage and reinforce it with the help of a local mechanic. Logan Carter is successful in completing his mission and recruits Jin, the mechanic’s daughter into his group, as the mechanic is infected and does not want Jin in harm’s way.
Logan Carter arrives in the city to find it overrun and the church under attack. After securing it, he works with Mother Helen, who is leading the refugees inside the church, to restore the church’s water supply in return for help finding food. After the water is restored, Helen informs that the city has been looted and food is gone, except in the Wealthy District across the river, in which the bridges leading to it have been destroyed. After helping various survivors at the church and across the city, Joseph agrees to lead Logan Carter through the sewers to the other side. Logan Carter makes it to the City Hall, packed with survivors and police officers, only to be declined assistance by the mayor. Ready to give up, Jin demands Logan Carter to find food to help everyone or she takes the truck and leaves him behind. Logan Carter makes his way to the supermarket, defeats the gang of bandits inhabiting the store, and secures food in which Jin and Joseph drive back to the church. Logan Carter arrives at the church to find an injured Joseph, who informs that Jin tried to give supplies to the police station only to be kidnapped by the thugs who took it over. Logan Carter makes his way to the station, defeats the gang and its leader, and rescues an injured Jin. The food is given to the church and brought back to the Lifeguard Tower. Sinamoi informs that Dominic went to the hotel to try and use the antenna to contact the Voice. The attempt is successful and the Voice reveals himself to be Colonel Ryder White, on the prison island off-shore. In order for Logan Carter to reach it, he must enlist the help of Mowen, a jungle smuggler, who knows his way around the minefield that surrounds the island.
Jin accompanies Logan Carter into the jungle and helps the residents of an ambushed village, getting revenge by killing the jungle warlord Afran and his army who attacked the village after zombies swarmed it. After revenge is served, Logan Carter rides in a boat and meets Mowen, who claims he does not know how to get to the island, but instead brings him to a secret government laboratory in the jungle. Logan Carter arrives at the Geo Pharm Laboratory and meets a group of surviving scientists. They explain that they think they know what caused the outbreak, a mysterious strain of the Kuru virus found in the Kuruni tribe, a group of natives living in the jungle. Logan Carter meets with the tribe’s shaman, Ope, who agrees to bring him to his now-abandoned village after completing a challenge proving him to be a worthy warrior. The shaman explains that his village was overrun when his tribesmen ate the flesh of the deceased, stating that they came back as zombies. At the catacombs atop of the mountain overlooking the village, they find Yerema, Ope’s daughter. Ope is killed just before he can harm his daughter, who he believed to be infected. Yerema is in fact infected, but immune to the virus. She is brought back to the laboratory so she can be examined and the leading researcher, Dr. West, hopes to find a cure with her blood. Logan Carter returns to the city and resort to get supplies and allow Jin to complete unfinished business before Mowen takes them to the prison island. Just before they depart, they alerted that something has gone wrong at the lab. They find it overrun with everyone dead and Yerema locked in a cage. She explained that Dr. West was taking too much blood from her and she tried to escape by locking herself in a cage. Dr. West accidentally released captive zombies by unlocking the wrong cages and he, along with his surviving staff, was killed.
Yerema is brought to the prison where they find roughly fifty prisoners have survived the carnage. Logan Carter is forced in completing several tasks for the lead prisoner in order to be given access to where Ryder White is situated. Unfortunately, a riot breaks out against the lead prisoner and zombies, lured by the sounds of the riot, attack, killing everyone. Mowen was able to help Jin and Yerema escape into a vent but he was killed. The women meet up with Logan Carter and the ascend upwards to the elevator, but are gassed by Ryder White, who steals the antidote retrieved from the lab. They are greeted by a prisoner, Charon who uses the alias Kevin. Charon explains what happened and they all head for the rooftop where Ryder is about to escape with his infected wife. After a shootout against a squad of BIDF soldiers, Logan Carter and the others confront Ryder. Jin tries to explain that it is too late for Emily, Ryder’s wife, as she is fully infected. She releases Emily from her constraints and she attacks Ryder. Ryder is bitten and kills his wife and out of rage, shoots Jin twice, who falls off the helipad and is killed. Ryder then mutates into a special Infected only to be defeated and killed. Logan Carter, along with Charon and Yerema, boards the helicopter and flies off the island.

Playing as Logan
Logan's specialty is throwing weapons but the player shouldn't limit themselves to things like knives and double blades - his skills stretch to any hurled
melee weapon including axes, katanas, machetes, cleavers and anything inbetween. Try and stick to bladed weapons; due to their lighter weight, they
generally fly further than blunt ones. Logan earns his title 'jack of all trades' by his skill tree options, which are very versatile and allow players to
adapt to virtually any strategy.
At the very start of the game there are lots of smaller sharp weapons. The player should keep the stongest ones they find to fling at enemies before
they get too close (aim for the head to cause the most damage). To deal with zombies that survive the initial blade storm use a couple of quick, one-
handed blunt weapons to make use of Logan's early skills; baseball bats - especially modified Nail'd ones - and hammers are ideal. Logan has many
skills which allow him to take advantage of any one-handed weapon type, so players should choose ones that compliment their play style.
Logan's ultimate crowd-control weapon is the Mindblowing Military Knife, created by the Developer's No. 4 Craft blueprint. This special military
knife is the only weapon that has the 'Mindblowing' effect on it, exploding the heads of any Walker or Infected it hits; this effect will spread to other
zombies close by if Logan has learnt his Economical Throw skill, allowing him to take out massive groups of enemies with a single throw.
Logan's Bullseye fury skill is fun to use - he pulls out an unlimited amount of small throwing blades and hurls them at any zombies in range at rapid
speed, turning the nearby area into a death storm. Longshot (which is on the second tier of the fury skill tree) is essential, increasing the range of
Bullseye exponentially, but also look out for True Bullseye and Deadeye Bullseye - they increase the amount of enemies struck at once.
A great early skill to learn is Mass Driver, which increases Logan's throwing range; not only will this allow him to take out some zombies before they even notice but it will also present extra time to prepare an attack and throw more weapons, weakening enemies at range before they close in. Economical Throw and Mighty Throw both add to Logan's long-range abilities; The former skill spreads a percentage of the damage you cause to zombies near a target when you use a thrown weapon (allowing for distanced crowd-control) and the latter one increase the damage you cause with thrown weapons.
For fans of firearms Logan has Aimed Shots - increasing the power of any guns he uses by up to 15% - and ultimately Firearms Apprentice to push his skills even further. These skills are mid-to-late game abilities but the more powerful firearms only start coming into frequent use mid-to-late game. Until then Logan can stick with his thrown weapons for zombie enemies although it's worth keeping a firearm close by to deal with human punks in Moresby City.
Note: It's worth mentioning that while it's not stated in-game, Logan's Firearms Apprentice skill gives him a jump-stomp so he can use stomp without stopping. Unfortunately, he doesn't get the instant knock-down move the other characters learn.
Note: Drunken master plus mighty trow is very useful. Your damage increase if you got drunken master (RANK 3) 60% damage and mighty throw(RANK 3) 30%, increasing your damage to 90%, almost twice the damage.
Logan's Boomerang skills are very useful - they sometimes cause weapons to return to his hand when they're thrown with increasing success rates.
This allows players to throw the same weapon again quickly afterwards or switch to melee fighting if an enemy is getting close. It also saves potential weapon misplacement and allows the player to spend less time foraging through rotting corpses to pick up their favourite weapon.
Logan's drunken master skill is very effective. It increases the damage he inflicts by massive amounts (especially at the skill's higher ranks) providing one can fight through blurry vision. Drunken master is a great skill to use with Medicinal Purposes which is found further down the survival skill tree; this combination can turn Logan into a drunken killing machine.
Logan players can use edged weapons to throw at the heads of Infected to take them out rather than swinging weapons wildly. This can help in surviving a fight against charging Infected.
Medicinal Purposes is an excellent mid-to-late game skill, giving Logan a rapid healing ability when he drinks alcohol. Not only is alcohol cheaper to buy than a medKit, it's also way easier to find; the only downside is that the health regeneration isn't instant. This is made up for - especially on the skill's second and third ranks - by a rapid recovery speed and the fact that alcohol will actually restore more health than the medkits do over time. Careful management of Logan's skills can be beneficial to both solo and co-op players.
If any of Logan's skills is passed over, it should be Fireproof. This gives Logan a resistance to fire which is only really useful on the odd occasion when he's attacked by flaming zombies or manages to miss-throw a molotov cocktail/incendiary grenade.
- Logan is on the medications Prozac for his mood and Tramadol for his knee.
- The following is the official description taken from the Dead Island website:
- A former American football star, spoiled by life and successful in every possible way, Logan's ego finally put an end to his bright future. Taking part in a reckless street race with tragic consequences, Logan not only killed a young woman - his unfortunate passenger; he also fractured his knee, putting an end to his sports career. His fall from stardom inevitably followed and he plunged swiftly into a life of bitterness and despair. In an attempt to get away from the demons hunting him, he gladly takes the chance to experience the beauties and wonders of Banoi.
- Soon enough though the getaway he was dreaming about turns into a real life nightmare...
- The Game Text files have the following scrapped closing dialogue for Logan Carter:
- "Deep down I always thought I was shit. Even when I was at the top of my game, Part of me knew that I didn't deserve it. That they would find me out. That it would all end. And it did. But did I learn from that? Did I change who I was? Fuck no, man. I just enjoyed wallowing in my own fucking misery, drinking myself half blind. Boo hoo, right? Well, I'm done with that. Done feeling sorry for myself. Seeing the whole world go to shit puts your own fucking problems in perspective a little bit. When you're saving some poor sumbitch's ass, you don't have time to wallow in self pity. There's a lesson there. I'm not sure exactly what it is. I'm not that fucking smart. But I do know one thing, man. I'm not as big an asshole as I thought I was."

Dead Island Riptide
Logan and his fellow survivors from Banoi land on the HMAS Avenger in hopes of finding rescue. Instead, they are detained and quarantined by Colonel Hardy and Frank Serpo. Serpo and his medic do tests on the four immune survivors and lock them in the brig. However, that night an outbreak triggers on the ship, turning much of the crew into zombies. The ship has also found itself trapped in a monsoon. Logan eventually reaches the brig and puts down the zombified captain so Hardy may gain control of the ship, but it slams into the rocks sending the survivors overboard.
Logan awakens on the beach on Palanai Island by Harlow Jordan. The woman instructs Logan to head for the Paradise Survival Camp, where other survivors have gathered. When Logan arrives at the camp, he finds it being attacked, so she helps defend it. It is at the camp that Logan finds his teammates from Banoi and Harlow returns from the beach with Colonel Hardy. After a fight is prevented, the survivors agree on a plan to reach Henderson for evacuation. In order to do so, Logan is sent out to find the road that leads to the city, only to discover the bridge has been washed out from the monsoon. He is tasked with getting help from the town of Halai and he comes across a missionary, Marcus Villa, who says he is able to help. However, it is revealed that he is slightly sadistic and believes that by eating the flesh of the immune, the zombie plague will be vanquished. When no one reveals themselves as one of the immune, he sets the Paradise camp on fire. After defending themselves from a zombie horde, Harlow eventually rescues the survivors from the burning camp and they regroup in Halai. With no help from Marcus, the survivors turn to Dr. Kessler, a researcher living at the laboratory in the jungle. He is able to provide help and a map to the tunnels that eventually lead to the city. With a plan in tow, Logan and the survivors leave Halai and arrive at the ruins of the Santa Maria Mission. The passageway beneath the old church is flooded, so the loud pump must be used to drain the water. While the pump is on, dozens of zombies attack the ruins, but the survivors are successful in defending themselves and make their way through the tunnels. After battling against zombies, obstacles, and a group of smugglers, they reach the Pinai Ferry Station.
However, as soon as the survivors emerge from the tunnels, Wayne complains of feeling sick. It is revealed that he was bitten and was abandoned in the tunnels by Harlow. He had come into contact with some of the chemicals stored in the tunnels and he mutated into a Wrestler. Logan and the immune eventually put down the hulking, disfigured Wayne, and continue to the ferry terminal. A group of prisoners who escaped their transport are found at the terminal and after they threaten Logan for weapons, money, and supplies, they are killed as Logan becomes enraged with Fury, an effect of being the Kuru virus being exposed to the mutagens from the tunnels. With the prisoners dead and their captive, Marvin, rescued, they board the ferry and cross the bay to the city.
Docking in Henderson, they find it overrun with the dead. After clearing the harbor, they reside in a shop and make plans to evacuate to the Old Town Cinema. Logan leads the way and clears the streets and the theater itself to allow his group to safely reach the theater. In the journey to the theater, Harlow is lost though the group meets Jacqueline Phantom, the theater owner who was rescued from the zombies in the cinema. In return, Jacqueline allows the survivors to stay at the cinema and she gives them food. She explains what happened in the city and how the military started shooting civilians. Despite tensions between the immune and the non-immune, Hardy remains optimistic that the military at the Palanai Military Outpost will help them. Logan heads out for the base to find it completely overrun, but is able to contact Frank Serpo in the telecommunications room. He informs Logan that a rescue chopper is being sent to pick him up. Back at the theater, the survivors gather on the roof and await the helicopter. However, Serpo demands for the immune to board first and the survivors object. In an attempt to gain command, Hardy begins to climb the helicopter's ladder, only to be gunned down. The helicopter is shot down and the survivors are left to defend themselves as a zombie horde attacks. Logan locates the ruins of the helicopter at the Fort of Henderson and the cellars of the fort are cleared, in which Serpo is located after he escaped the crash site. With Serpo secured, the survivors relocate to the secured fort. With rumors of a boat at the Docks District, Logan sets for the docks, which is in the established quarantine zone. While at the docks, Logan comes across an underground field laboratory and Harlow herself. She has gone seemingly insane, having been captured and experimented on with the mutagen. She declares that the infection must not spread beyond Palanai and the only way is to kill everyone, including the immune. Logan tries to calm Harlow down, but she injects herself with the mutagen and attacks the hero. Logan, in an attempt to defend himself, injects himself with the mutagen to gain strength in order to put down the crazed Harlow. He is successful and Harlow is killed. He also finds a boat, in which he brings to the fort and leaves Serpo, who followed Logan at the docks, behind. The survivors board the boat and finally escape Palanai.
